The Seshin Set

There is a ritual practiced in Korean bathhouses that has no Western equivalent.

It begins with a long soak in herb-steeped water — mugwort, minerals, heat — until the skin is soft and the body has slowed down. Then comes the scrub. A coarse viscose cloth, held at both ends, drawn across the body in firm strokes. Dead skin rolls away in visible ribbons. Underneath: new skin. Softer than you thought yours could be.

This is the seshin (세신). Koreans have been doing it for centuries. It is not a spa treatment. It is not a trend. It is the reason Korean skin looks the way it does — and it is almost entirely unknown in the West.
